Garage Door Safety Sensor
Repair in Renton, WA
We diagnose and repair garage door safety sensors for all major opener brands in Renton and the greater Seattle area.
When your garage door reverses on its own or will not close, the safety sensors near the floor are the most likely cause. We diagnose and repair photo-eye sensors on all major opener brands across Renton and the Eastside, including alignment, wiring and full sensor replacement.
Signs Your Safety Sensors Need Repair
Door Reverses Before Closing
The door starts to close, then reverses before it reaches the floor. No obstruction is visible. This is the most common symptom of misaligned or blocked safety sensors.
Opener Light Blinks After Close Attempt
The light on the opener unit flashes repeatedly after you try to close the door. Most openers use a specific blink count to signal a sensor fault.
One Sensor LED Is Off or Flickering
One sensor shows a steady light, the other is dark or blinking. This usually means the receiving sensor has lost alignment or has a wiring fault.
Door Only Closes With the Wall Button
The wall button closes the door, but the remote will not. Holding the wall button bypasses the sensors, which confirms the sensors are the issue.
Sensor Bracket Is Bent or Shifted
The bracket that holds the sensor is visibly bent, rotated or knocked out of position. This can happen from foot traffic, bikes, strollers or a bump with the car.
Frayed or Damaged Sensor Wires
The low-voltage wire running from the sensor to the opener is frayed, pinched by a staple, chewed by a rodent or has corroded connections.
How Safety Sensors Work
Every residential garage door opener uses a pair of photo-eye sensors to detect obstructions. Here is how the system works.
Transmitter
One sensor mounts on one side of the door opening, roughly 6 inches off the floor. It sends a continuous infrared beam across the doorway to the other sensor.
Receiver
The second sensor receives the beam. When the beam is unbroken, the opener allows the door to close. If anything blocks the beam, the opener reverses the door.
Wiring
Each sensor connects to the opener with low-voltage wire. Damaged, pinched or corroded wiring causes the same symptoms as a misaligned sensor and requires a continuity test.
LED Indicators
Each sensor has an LED. A steady light means the sensor is working. A blinking or dark LED points to misalignment, a wiring fault or a failed sensor unit.

Alignment Fix or Full Replacement
Most sensor problems are alignment issues that we fix on the spot. Sometimes the sensor itself has failed and needs to be replaced.
Realignment Usually Fixes It When:
- Bracket has shifted but sensor is intact
- LED blinks but steadies when repositioned
- Wiring is undamaged
- Lenses are dirty but not cracked
- Sensor body is not corroded
We Replace the Sensor When:
- Sensor LED stays off after alignment
- Lens is cracked or sensor body is corroded
- Wiring is chewed through or shorted
- Internal circuitry has failed
- Sensor model is no longer available; we match a replacement to your opener
We explain what we find and give you clear options before any work starts.
How We Repair Safety Sensors
Inspect Both Sensors
We check alignment, LED status, lens condition and bracket position. We note which sensor is transmitting and which is receiving, and test whether the beam is reaching the other side.
Test the Wiring
We verify continuity from each sensor back to the opener terminals. We check for pinched wires, corroded connections and shorts. Wiring faults cause the same symptoms as misalignment.
Repair or Replace
If the sensors are intact, we realign the brackets, clean the lenses and secure the wiring. If a sensor has failed, we install a new one matched to your opener brand.
Safety Test
We close the door through multiple cycles and place an obstruction in the beam path to verify that the opener reverses every time. The door does not leave our hands until it passes.

Safety sensors work with all residential openers. If your brand is not listed, call us with the model number and we will confirm compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about garage door safety sensor problems and repairs.
01 What do garage door safety sensors do?
Safety sensors are photo-eye devices mounted near the floor on each side of the garage door opening. They send an invisible beam across the doorway. If anything breaks that beam while the door is closing, the opener reverses the door to prevent contact. Federal safety rules have required entrapment protection, such as photo-eye sensors, on residential garage door openers since 1993.
02 Why does my garage door reverse before it reaches the floor?
The most common cause is misaligned safety sensors. If the sensor lenses are dirty, one sensor is bumped out of position, or wiring is damaged, the opener reads a broken beam and reverses the door. Cleaning the lenses and checking alignment usually identifies the issue.
03 Can I replace just one sensor?
In most cases, yes. If only one sensor is physically damaged or has a failed LED, we can replace that unit. If both sensors are old and corroded, replacing the pair is more reliable.
04 Why is the light on my garage door opener blinking?
A blinking opener light usually signals a sensor issue. Most openers blink a specific number of times to indicate the error type. Our technicians read the blink code, identify the fault and explain the fix.
05 Do you repair sensors on all opener brands?
Yes. We service safety sensors on LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Raynor, Marantec, Linear and Overhead Door openers. Sensor wiring and alignment follow the same principles across brands.
