Smart openers are simple once they are set up. But before that, you probably have a few questions. Here are the ones we get the most.
01 Do I need to replace my whole opener to get smart features?
Not always. If you have a LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener made after 2015, you can probably add the MyQ smart module for around $30 to $50. It plugs into your existing unit and gives you full app control. For older openers or other brands, a full smart opener replacement is the more reliable option. We check your model and tell you which route makes sense.
02 What happens to the smart features during a power outage?
Smart openers with battery backup keep working during outages. The door still opens and closes, and the Wi-Fi module reconnects automatically when power comes back. If your opener does not have battery backup, you can still use the manual release handle to operate the door by hand.
03 Does the app work when I am far from home?
Yes. As long as your home Wi-Fi is running and your phone has internet, you can open, close, and check your garage door from anywhere in the world. Most people use it to let someone in when they are at work or to double-check that the door is closed after they leave.
04 Can other people in my family use the app too?
Yes. You can invite family members through the app. Each person gets their own login. You can also set up guest access with temporary permissions, so a dog walker or house cleaner can use the door without getting permanent access.
05 Will this work with Alexa or Google Home?
Yes. LiftMaster MyQ works with both Alexa and Google Assistant. You can say "Alexa, close the garage door" and it does it. You can also add it to routines, like automatically closing the garage when you say goodnight.
06 Is a smart opener harder to install than a regular one?
For us, no. The installation takes the same 2 to 3 hours as a standard opener. The only extra step is connecting it to your Wi-Fi and walking you through the app. We do that before we leave so everything is working when we go.
